PA Colonial Voicethreads

Mrs. Smith’s 4th grade class recently completed an activity during their Colonial PA unit which included researching using a custom Google search, Google docs, and Voicethread. Students shared researched information on their Voicethread slides and then provided comments that were opinion based in order to focus on the difference between fact and opinion.

The Voicethreads can be viewed by clicking on the links below, and we welcome any comments/feedback. Simply click on the Comments button at the bottom of this post. Thanks for visiting!

Red Mill’s Youngest Author

Did you know that Red Mill has a budding author? Inspired by a book Mr. Chris Schroeder read to his First Grade Class, Marlayna decided that she wanted to write her own story. Done entirely on her own – Marlayna’s story as all the elements you’d expect to find- characters, setting, plot, and a resolution! Click below to hear the author read her story from start to finish.

2nd Grade Digital Pen Pals

Mrs. Sanderson‘s class is taking full advantage of the digital age in which we now live. She has reached out and connected her students to a class in Northeastern School District. Mrs. Sanderson’s efforts have helped her students at Red Mill become digital pen pals with students in Mr. Rodgers‘ class at York Haven Elementary.

Mrs. Sanderson and Mr. Rodgers use wikispaces to pair each student up with a pen pal. Each pair has their own wiki page. Students began by answering questions about themselves in order to get to know one another. Once students learned about one another, the wiki took more of a curricular focus. For example, both classes read the same story in their reading books, and they responded to questions about the story. They also posted and discussed their favorite part of the story. The classes also created a survey which relates to the story, and the classes will then graph and compare their responses. The two classes finally participated in a Skype chat in order to meet their pen pals!

Technology has truly taken pen pals to a new level. While there is still something to be said for receiving snail mail, using a collaborative space like wikispaces allows instant responses and thus provides many more opportunities in a school year to communicate with one another. It also allows opportunities for one-on-one communication with a pen pal, but they can now easily participate in whole-class activities. Using digital pen pals also allowed them to Skype with one another and actually see their pen pal. Mrs. Sanderson and Mr. Rodgers provided an amazing opportunity for these two classes. What a great way to make a new friend and learn at the same time!

100th Day of School

To celebrate our 100th day of school, Red Mill asked our kindergarten students to create a project that represented 100 of any object. The project may be as simple as using 100 buttons to make a button necklace or as elaborate as using 100 blocks to build an igloo. We are very proud of the hard work and dedication our parents and students displayed in completing these projects. Students and teachers from grades 1-5 loved coming down and looking at all the wonderful projects. We’d like to share a few of these outstanding projects.

100 Gumballs

Basket of 100 Worms

100 Day Plant

100 Strawberries

100 Day Dragon

A special thank you to Mrs. Myers, Mrs. Bachman, and Mr. Konieczny for sharing this project!

A Day in the Snow

Two brains are better than one!  Mr. Schroeder’s first grade class and Mrs. Shover’s fourth grade class came together to create a short narrative about a day in the snow!  Students came together on this collaborative writing project by creating a comic strip about a fun day in the snow and then decorated it with pictures.  Each group shared their ideas with their classmates.  Both sets of students worked hard and enjoyed this activity so much they wanted to share it with everybody! Please click on the A Day in the Snow link below to see a slideshow of the final products.
